Dr. Alger practices all areas of urology and has fellowship training in complex robotic and minimally invasive urologic surgery for the treatment of urologic cancers, enlarged prostates, and upper urinary tract pathology. Dr. Alger completed his undergraduate education at Rice University and earned his master’s in biomedical sciences at Tufts University School of Medicine. He then received his medical degree at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and went on to complete his general surgery internship and urology residency at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., which included 6 months of training at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD. He has presented his research in prostate cancer at national meetings and has received several awards in recognition of his teaching and clinical skills. During residency, Dr. Alger developed an interest in minimally invasive therapies that minimize patient discomfort and optimize outcomes. For example, Dr. Alger is one of the few urologists in the Rocky Mountain region trained to perform holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) for enlarged prostates (BPH), which is associated with reduced bleeding and shorter hospital stays. Additionally, Dr. Alger has extensive experience performing kidney stone surgeries, UroLift for BPH, penile and urinary sphincter implants, “no-scalpel” vasectomies, and both MR-TRUS fusion and transperineal prostate biopsies. After residency, Dr. Alger pursued fellowship training in advanced robotic and minimally invasive urologic surgery at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine to focus on two of his passions: urologic cancer treatment and upper urinary tract reconstruction. He has performed a high volume of complex robotic surgery of the kidneys, adrenals, ureters, bladder, and prostate and is highly skilled in retroperitoneoscopic surgery for removing challenging kidney cancers. As a former high school teacher, Dr. Alger has always enjoyed working with people, problem solving, teaching, and helping those in need. He fell in love with Urology because it affords him the opportunity to form close, long-term relationships with his patients and provide innovative and effective treatments that often dramatically improve patient quality of life. When he is not at work, Dr. Alger enjoys being outdoors with his wife and two children hiking, playing numerous sports, and identifying birds and wild mushrooms. He also enjoys music, travel, and appreciating international cultures and cuisines.
